The Dhaka Times Desk Former Secretary Kazi Habibul Awal has been appointed as Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) by President Md. Abdul Hamid.
The notification for appointment of new CEC and four election commissioners has been issued today (Saturday). In addition to the Chief Election Commissioner, retired senior secretary Md. has been appointed as the Election Commissioner in this new Election Commission. Alamgir and Anichur Rahman, retired District and Sessions Judge Rashida Sultana and retired Brigadier General Ahan Habib Khan.
Habibul Awal, who was appointed as the new CEC, retired as the senior secretary of the Ministry of Defense in 2017.
This officer of BCS 1981 batch was Secretary of Religion, Parliament Secretariat. After retirement from government service, he was teaching at BRAC University.
The 12th parliamentary election will be held under the leadership of Habibul Awal, who was appointed as the 13th CEC of Bangladesh.
Although the appointment notification has been issued by the cabinet department, it is not yet confirmed when they will take oath.
Previously, the President started the dialogue with the political parties on December 20 last year to form a search committee for the formation of the new Election Commission, which continued till January 17. Out of 32 invited parties, 25 participated in these dialogues. However, the largest party BNP was out of this dialogue and naming.
On January 27 this year, the EC Appointment Act was passed by Parliament. Then the President formed a search committee on February 5.
The search committee held its first meeting on February 6 at the judges' lounge of the Supreme Court. Then on February 8, the search committee held a second meeting to call for names from registered groups, organizations and individuals.
After that, the search committee held a meeting with prominent people on February 11 and 12. For those who did not submit their names, the announcement of extension of time also came on February 13.
The next day, on February 14, the KM Nurul Huda-led EC resigned and a list of 322 names proposed for appointment to the EC was released.
The search committee held a meeting with journalists on February 15. The next day, more than 300 names were scrutinized in the committee meeting and 20 people were brought down from the list in the fifth meeting on February 19.
In the sixth meeting of the committee on February 20, the list of 12/13 names was decided and in the seventh meeting on February 22, the list of 10 people was finalized.
Then the search committee submitted the final list to the President on February 24. From where the president formed a new committee of these 5 people. Abdul Hamid.
