Ukraine war: 28 people from Bangladeshi ship taken to safe haven

The Dhaka Times Desk A Bangladeshi ship was attacked in Ukraine's Olvia port. Engineer Hadisur Rahman Arif was killed.

Meanwhile, State Minister of Shipping Khaled Mahmud Chowdhury said in a press conference that it depends on the war situation when it will be possible to bring the ship back to the country. The state minister for marine also said that the ship has enough food stock.

Bangladeshi ship MV Bangla Samriddhi anchored at Ukraine's Olvia port on February 22. The ship was stranded due to delay in obtaining clearance. A Russian missile hit the ship around 9:30 pm on Wednesday. Engineer Hadisur Rahman Arif was killed by this.

The remaining 28 sailors of the ship are unharmed. Bangladesh Ambassador Sultana Laila Hossain confirmed from Poland that they along with Hadisur Rahman's body have been taken to safe shelter.

Ambassador Sultana Laila Hossain said that the 28 sailors and engineers in the Bangladeshi ship stuck in Ukraine's Olvia port have been evacuated to a safe shelter two kilometers away from the port.

He said that the body of engineer Hadisur Rahman Arif, who was killed in the rocket attack on the ship named 'Banglar Samriddi', has also been taken to a safe freezer.

He said that efforts are being made to take these 28 people across the border to Poland along with Hadisur Rahman's body.

Arif's relatives spoke on mobile before the ship caught fire. Just then the phone call was disconnected with a loud noise. Arif's family said that while talking to his younger brother, a loud noise was heard and the phone call was cut.

Arif was the eldest among three brothers and one sister. Family members are speechless after losing the sole breadwinner.
