The Dhaka Times Desk Taraweeh prayers are going to be held in the coming Ramadan for the first time in 88 years at the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque in Istanbul, the capital of Turkey. The mosque will also host several events on the occasion of Ramadan.
It is known that the Hagia Sophia was converted into a museum in 1934. In 2020 it reverted back to mosque status. Haya Sufiya was opened for prayers on 24 July 2020.
Prayers at the mosque have been closed since the start of the coronavirus pandemic as part of Turkey's Covid-19 restrictions to avoid the risk of infection.
However, due to the vaccination of most of the people, the number of new corona infections and deaths in the country is decreasing and the number of recoveries is also increasing every day. So the Turkish authorities decided to reopen the mosque during Ramadan, the holiest month of the year for Muslims.
Note that Hagia Sophia was built in 532 AD. Then it was converted into a mosque in 1453. Hagia Sophia was used as a church for 916 years and as a museum for 86 years. However, from 1453 to 1934, it was used as a mosque for about 500 years. In 2020, the country's court decided to convert it back into a mosque.
Hagia Sophia was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. The Hagia Sophia is one of the top tourist destinations in Turkey. Currently it is open to domestic and foreign visitors.
