The Dhaka Times Desk Today Sunday (June 26) Padma Bridge has been opened for vehicular traffic from 6 am. Due to which the traffic has started at the scheduled time.
As soon as the bridge was opened for traffic, the 14 toll gates on both ends became operational. Fare collection is started manually at all the gates. Any vehicle except three wheelers can cross through this dream Padma Bridge with fixed toll.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated this bridge yesterday (Saturday) on the Mawa side of Padma at 10 am. After the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina unveiled the inaugural plaque and mural-1 by paying the toll at the Mawa end of the bridge. After the inauguration, he reached the Jazira end and unveiled the inauguration plaque of the bridge and Mural-2.
After attending a large public meeting, the Prime Minister went to the Service Area-2 of Jazira. From there he returned to Dhaka by helicopter.
The name of the biggest infrastructure in Bangladesh is this Padma Bridge. The 6.15 km bridge connects the two districts of Dhaka Division, Munshiganj and Shariatpur. Not only this, this bridge connects 21 districts of the southern region with the capital Dhaka. The steel and concrete double-decker bridge has a four-lane road on the upper level and a railway track on the lower level, along with gas lines, internet connection lines. That is why this bridge is called versatile.
The Padma is the second largest river in the world after the Amazon. There is only one bridge in the world over such a river. So special technology as well as high quality materials have been used during construction to make this bridge durable. Padma Bridge has 42 pillars and 41 spans. Steel piles are installed at a maximum depth of 122 meters below the pier. In other words, piles had to be taken deep to the height of a 40-story building. No bridge in the world has ever had such deep piling.
And Padma Bridge has state-of-the-art CCTV cameras. In addition to general lighting facilities, bridges also have architectural lighting systems for illumination and beautification.
Meanwhile, although the bridge was inaugurated yesterday, it was opened for traffic for the first time today. However, long lines of many cars accumulate at both ends from night. At 6 in the morning, the work of tolling on the bridge started immediately. After that, everyone is relieved to be able to climb the bridge of that dream. Because the people of the southern region were tired of waiting for hours for the ferry. Today, everyone is happy to see the realization of their long-time dream and actually cross over this bridge.
