The Dhaka Times Desk Kalim Ullah Khan, an inventor from Uttar Pradesh, India, has invented about three hundred new varieties of mangoes from just one hundred-year-old mango tree. At 82, Kalim is still inventing new mango varieties.
According to Deutsche Welle, Kalim 'created' 7 mango varieties by grafting from one mango tree at a young age. But then the tree was uprooted in a storm. Then in 1987, he started testing again with a sample from a hundred-year-old tree. He never stopped after that. More than 300 species have been invented so far. Each is different in taste, smell and size.
The development of so many species of mangoes from a 120-year-old tree is astounding. Kaleem Ullah feels that this is the fruit of his decades of hard work. He further said, “To the naked eye it is just a tree. But a closer look reveals that it is actually a mango orchard, the world's largest mango university.”
Kalim Ullah is one of the mango varieties invented so far. He named the species after popular Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. After Aishwarya won the Miss World title in 1994, Kaleem Ullah named a mango variety after Aishwarya. He considers this variety to be the best mango he has ever invented.
Not just Aishwarya, the mangoes named after Kaleem include Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kaleem Ullah, the father of 8 children, said that humans may not exist but mangoes will remain forever. People will remember the great hero of cricket by playing Sachin Aam.
Another name of pomegranate is Anarkali. But Kaleem Ullah also named a mango variety he invented as Anarkali. The specialty of this species is that this mango has two layers of skin. The taste and smell of the two layers of mango are also quite different. Being the inventor of so many mangoes, he is now called 'Amr Manav'.
