The Dhaka Times Desk The activities of the British Council's youth-led program 'Our Shared Cultural Heritage' (OSCH) were recently showcased in Rajshahi.
The program was shown on July 28 and 29. The project is planned to engage and encourage young people to engage with cultural heritage through continuous training and activities. Under this project, 31 young people are working on cultural heritage since 2021. One of the objectives of the project is to involve the youth as well as the general population so that they get an understanding of heritage and heritage related work.
On July 28, a program was organized at Varendra Research Museum, the research partner of this project. British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Robert Chatterton Dickson and British Council Bangladesh Director Tom Mischa and other guests were present at the event.
During the event OSCH partners and Youth Board members gave a presentation explaining their activities. Then a short documentary on the Varendra Research Museum was screened. Later, guests toured the museum. During this time the members of OSCH Youth Board spoke to the guests about their experience of working in the museum.
Robert Chatterton Dickson, the British High Commissioner assigned to Bangladesh on the occasion, said, “This is a wonderful initiative. Bangladesh is very rich in tradition and has a lot of youth in this country. This young population should be involved with the rich cultural heritage of the country. The British Council's job is to create opportunities for young people." The next day (July 29) a trip to Puthia Palace was arranged. There, OSCH Youth Board members presented its history to the guests. OSCH Youth Board members, partners and members of OSCH's UK team discuss the one year of OSCH's activities and the obstacles encountered in doing the work. A group of young people then recited Punthi, an old form of storytelling that is part of Bangladesh's cultural heritage.
Notably, Our Shared Cultural Heritage (OSCH) is a youth-led program of the British Council, which aims to open up new dimensions of cultural and historical exchange between the UK and South Asian countries. CCD and Udant are conducting this program focusing on the heritage of Rajshahi with the support of Varendra Research Museum in Bangladesh.
