It took months to train Ukrainian fighters to use heavy weapons such as High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) obtained from Western countries. They are advancing slowly towards Kherson. They have already taken control of 44 villages and some suburbs.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that 'by taking control of Kherson, the Ukrainian army wants to show that it has the ability to win this war ultimately'. Many believe that this can decide the battle. Destroying the bridge and capturing the Ukrainian city could also cut off Russian forces from the south. On the other hand, from Russia's point of view, if the city can be maintained, it will facilitate the capture of Odessa port.
