The Dhaka Times Desk Huawei has launched Asia Pacific Seeds for the Future 2022 in collaboration with the ASEAN Foundation and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to encourage young people in the digital field to create a better future.
The opening ceremony of the program was attended by Honorable Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Jurin Laksanawijit of Thailand, Honorable Minister of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. Dipu Moni, ASEAN Secretary General Dato Lim Jok Hoi, ASEAN Foundation Executive Director Yang Mee Eng, Huawei Asia Pacific President Simon Lin, and other government officials and representatives of various international organizations were among the guests of honour. The speakers at the event emphasized on creating a strong digital talent ecosystem in the Asia Pacific region in partnership with various parties.
In this program to be held from August 19 to August 27, 120 talented students from 16 countries in the Asia Pacific region, including eight from Bangladesh, will participate in a digital boot camp in Thailand. Through this boot camp, participants will gain technical knowledge and unique experiences in cross-cultural fields. Besides, they will also present proposals to solve various social problems through the TechForGood project. This year, out of 120 participants, 56 are women. After the program started in 2008, this year will be the largest number of women participants in the program.
The Honorable Minister of the Ministry of Education of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh shed light on how digital talent can play a role in eliminating gender discrimination. Deepu Moni. She said, “Including our female students in STEM-based (STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education as well as creating equal opportunities for their development is crucial and the need is increasing. And in this case Seeds for the Future is working dedicatedly. Five talented women from Bangladesh are participating in this camp. We are happy about that. I believe their success will go a long way in empowering more women to contribute to Bangladesh's digital economy.”
Reiterating Huawei's commitment to developing talented young people, Simon Lin, President of Huawei Asia Pacific, said, “Seeds' highlights expectations, interests and futures. This long-running corporate flagship CSR program is being implemented in nearly 140 countries and regions. Through this, 12 thousand students of 500 universities are being reached. From 'Seeds' the program has evolved into 'Global Forest'.” He further said, “Digitalization is the key driver of the future.
Skilled youth are key to digital transformation and sustainable growth. We strongly believe that this young generation will establish themselves as the architects of the Asia Pacific region by fulfilling their dreams in the field of technology.” The program was jointly inaugurated by the Chief Executive of ASEAN Foundation. Yang Mee Eng, TAT's Digitization Research and Development Deputy Governor Nithi Sipre, Huawei Asia Pacific President Simon Lin and Huawei Thailand CEO Abel Deng. Their cultural and digital journey will begin today with a site visit. Site visits include: United Nations Regional Hub in Bangkok, Metaverse Expo and Grand Palace in Bangkok. Apart from this, industry experts will train the participants on the latest technologies like 5G, AI and Cloud Computing.
During the digital camp, participants will be divided into teams to pitch ideas on 'TechForGood', where they will showcase their ideas for building a better world. The winning team will participate in the Accelerator Camp from August 29 to September 4 in Singapore. In this camp, they can meet top level entrepreneurs and investors, get an opportunity to expand their venture and enter the market through the implementation of that venture.
Huawei's flagship corporate social responsibility program Seeds for the Future is attended by students from all the world's leading universities. The program was launched in Thailand in 2008 to inspire the creation of ICT talent and to encourage young people to work on digital solutions to various challenges facing society.
