The Dhaka Times Desk Really wonder. Located 28 kilometers south of the historic center of Mexico City is a village called 'Jochimilco'. There are two and a half million people floating! How and why?
This area is an endless maze of canals and waterways. Every waterway is lined with colorful 'trajinaras' (parallel boats). Vendors on some boats are also selling grilled elotes (corn) and michelada cocktails. And in some boats different bands are playing the famous mariachi music of Mexico.
The BBC reports that hundreds of tourists flock to Jochimilco's canals every weekend for sombreros, food, music and a dazzling display of art. The area is an ancient engineering wonder of Mexico. These man-made islands and farms are the last vestiges of the Aztec Empire's massive land reclamation project of the 14th century.
About the year 1325. Then the Aztecs arrived in the Valley of Mexico. They were very impressed by Lake Texcoco. Nomadic Aztec tribes settled here. Here they decided to build their capital city. It was then called 'Tenochtitlan'.
To solve the land crisis, the Aztecs created a genius plan called 'Chinampas'. They also make these long and narrow strips of land over artificially shallow lakes with mounds of required height. They are anchored to the bottom of the lake by a fence of native willow trees.
They used chinampas to create floating gardens in Jochimilco that could be used for agriculture, animal husbandry, hunting and foraging. This innovative technique of farming on water also allowed the Aztecs to sustain their growing empire. Due to which a floating city spread over 13 square kilometers was created, where more than two and a half lakh people live.
