The Dhaka Times Desk At least 33 people have died in floods and landslides across western Nepal, local media reported.
Floods that followed heavy rains in northwestern Karnali province last week also caused widespread damage, officials said. Thousands of residents were evacuated from there. Hundreds of houses were damaged by avalanches and floods.
At least 22 people are still missing in the province. Many people were injured. Rescuers said they faced various difficulties in reaching the hilly areas amid incessant rain. A police spokesperson said that 'Police officers have been dispatched to various affected areas. Helicopters have also been arranged to rescue the trapped people. He said, we have come to know that due to adverse weather conditions, there have been many problems in the rescue work. Most of the reports of missing people come from lowland Calicut district. Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated from their homes last week after heavy rain warnings were issued. Nepal's emergency department said the water level of the Karnali river has risen to more than 12 meters in some areas of Karnali province.
Several suspension bridges over the river have already been swept away by floodwaters, local media reported. Government officials have sent relief to those areas by helicopter.
UN humanitarian agencies said they were distributing food and medicine to the worst-hit areas in western Nepal. The monsoon season is almost at its end in Nepal. This season usually starts from June and lasts till October. According to the data of the country's National Disaster Response Center, at least 110 people have died in various rain-related disasters this year.
