The Dhaka Times Desk Nearly 1 billion children worldwide are at extreme risk due to the harmful effects of climate change.
A human rights group warned on Wednesday (October 19) that the quality of life of children has not improved over the past decade.
According to the Dutch-based NGO 'The KidsRights', based on the data sent by the United Nations agencies, one third of the world's children, which number about 82 million, are currently facing severe heat waves. 92 million children worldwide are victims of water scarcity. About 600 million or 1 in 4 children are affected by malaria and dengue.
The KidsRights is the first and only to produce an annual ranking or accurate measure of how children's rights are respected. In this regard, Iceland, Sweden and Finland are in the very first row of the ranking among 185 countries. The worst situations are in Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Chad.
Marc Dulert, founding chairman of The KidsRights, also described this year's report as worrying for the world's current and future generations.
He said rapid climate change threatens their future and fundamental rights.
He also said that there has been no significant progress in the quality of life of children in the last decade. Moreover, their quality of life has been further affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the KidRights index, the number of child laborers has increased to 16 crore for the first time in the last two decades.
However, Angola and Bangladesh have improved their position on child rights. Angola has managed to more than halve its 5-year-old child mortality rate. Bangladesh has been able to reduce the number of underweight children under 5 years by almost half, the report noted.
