Myanmar's junta government released more than 7,000 prisoners

The Dhaka Times Desk On the occasion of Myanmar's 75th Independence Day, the country's ruling junta released 7,120 prisoners under amnesty.

Junta chief General Min Aung Hlaing confirmed this information in a speech given to the country's official TV channel MRTV on Wednesday. Indian media NDTV has given this information in a report.

In that speech, the Junta chief said, 'Greetings to the general people of Myanmar on the 75th Independence Day. Like previous years, this year also a number of prisoners were released under amnesty on the occasion of Independence Day. The government has released 7 thousand 12 prisoners on the occasion of this year's Independence Day.

He also said that we are working closely with neighbors like China, Thailand, India, Laos and Bangladesh. We will work together for border stability and development.

It should be noted that on February 1, 2021, Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi's government was overthrown by the military forces and seized the country's national power. Suu Kyi was arrested and taken to an undisclosed prison. Min Aung Hlaing, who led the coup, became the head of the country's new military government.

Every year on Liberation Day from British rule, the Myanmar government releases some prisoners. This time also 7 thousand 12 people were released. However, it is not clear whether there are political prisoners among those released.
