The Dhaka Times Desk Indian officials have claimed that a new documentary by British broadcaster BBC is a 'disgusting campaign' about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government and its treatment of the country's Muslims.
The BBC documentary criticized Narendra Modi's leadership during the 2002 Gujarat riots. The Government of India strongly condemned this matter. The documentary is titled 'India: The Modi Quest'. It was not released in India. Even the government has imposed a ban on publishing any of its clips on Twitter and YouTube. Indian news channel NDTV published this news.
Government advisor Kanchan Gupta confirmed the matter on Twitter. He referred to the documentary as 'hateful propaganda'. He further mentioned that the ban has been issued under the IT Rules, 2021 as an emergency power of the government.
The documentary is based on a British government inquiry into the 2002 Gujarat riots. More than a thousand people died in this riot. At that time Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
The BBC also responded to their inquiries. According to the statement published on their website, the first part of the documentary is about investigating complaints about the attitude of the Modi government towards the Muslim population of India. And the second part is about the 'troubled relationship' between the Modi government and India's Muslim minority around the 2019 elections. The BBC says it has done due diligence and maintained the highest editorial standards.
On the other hand, Modi's political opponents in India have also spoken out against this censorship. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh tweeted on Saturday that, "The Prime Minister and his party stalwarts claim that the new BBC documentary on him is reprehensible." Censorship has been imposed on it.'' He asked why the then Prime Minister Vajpayee wanted to leave?
