The Dhaka Times Desk Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned Sweden after burning the Holy Quran outside Ankara's embassy in Stockholm.
Al-Jazeera reported that Erdogan warned Sweden on Monday (January 23) that it should not expect its support for joining NATO.
Erdogan's tough comments are seen by many as pushing away the prospect of Sweden and Finland joining the Western defense alliance ahead of Turkey's presidential and parliamentary elections in May.
Turkey and Hungary are the only NATO members that did not endorse the Nordic neighbors' historic decision to break their tradition of military non-alignment in response to Russia's aggression in Ukraine.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has promised that his parliament will approve Sweden and Finland's NATO membership next month.
However, Erdogan is heading for an election in May. Where he is also trying to strengthen his nationalist electoral base.
"Sweden should not expect support from us for NATO at all," Erdogan said in his first official response to an anti-Islamic politician's actions on Saturday.
He also said that the Swedish police allowed the demonstration despite Turkish objections.
Erdoğan said that, 'It is clear that those who committed such a humiliating incident in front of our country's embassy can no longer expect any cooperation from us regarding their application for NATO membership.'
Sweden reacted with extreme caution to Erdogan's comments.
