The Dhaka Times Desk Ankara continued its angry response after the Koran-burning and protests outside the Turkish embassy in Sweden.
In a televised address on Sunday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reiterated the issue. He said, excluding Sweden, Finland can be accepted into NATO. -The Guardian
Sweden and Finland wanted to join NATO together from the beginning. However, after the Koran burning incident in Sweden, Turkey announced the suspension of talks with the two countries about joining NATO. Just a few days later, Erdoğan also announced Ankara's green signal regarding Finland on Monday. He said that, 'If necessary, we can also give a different response to Finland. Sweden might be shocked if we react differently to Finland.' He also reiterated Ankara's expectations of Stockholm to hand over 'suspected terrorists'.
Erdogan said, "If you want to join NATO, return these terrorists to us." On the other hand, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Havisto said last Tuesday that, 'We have to assess the situation, something has happened that will prevent Sweden from moving forward in the long term.' However, he insisted on the two countries joining together in NATO.
It should be noted that Rasmus Paludan, the leader of Denmark's radical right-wing political party Hard Line, burned the Koran in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm. On January 21, Paludan set fire to the Quran with a lighter in front of the Turkish Embassy amid police security. Türkiye immediately responded to the incident in a statement. It said, 'We condemn in the strongest possible terms the heinous attack on our holy book. Allowing this anti-Islam act under the guise of freedom of expression is completely unacceptable.'
