The Dhaka Times Desk Saudi Arabia is sending its first female astronaut into space later this year. This is part of the recent steps the country has taken to shed its ultra-conservative image.
For the first time, a woman astronaut named Rayana Barnawi is being sent into space. The country's state media Saudi Press gave this information.
Rayana Barnawi is also scheduled to go to the International Space Station (ISS) with another astronaut named Ali Al-Qarni. They will join other astronauts aboard the AX-2 space mission. The Saudi Press Agency reported that the rocket carrying them would be launched from the United States. Earlier in 2019, the neighboring United Arab Emirates became the first Arab country to send a citizen into space. Following their path is the oil-rich country Saudi Arabia. At that time, the country's astronaut Hajja Al-Mansouri stayed on the ISS for 8 days. Sultan Al-Niyadi, another astronaut from the Emirates, went to space later. He became the first Arab astronaut to stay in space for 6 consecutive months.
It should be noted that the de facto leader of Saudi Arabia, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has taken various steps to bring about major changes in the country. Soon after coming to power in 2017, he allowed women to drive and travel abroad without a guardian. However, this is not the first time Saudi Arabia's expedition into space. Earlier in 1985, the then Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia traveled to space as part of a US mission. As part of Prince Salman's Vision 2030 agenda, the country took an initiative to send astronauts into space again from 2018. As part of that initiative, this plan has been implemented.
