The Dhaka Times Desk The US space agency NASA said that a 33-year-old Saudi woman named Rayana Barnawi will be the first Saudi woman in space to go to the International Space Station (ICC) on May 21.
Ali al-Qarni, another astronaut from Saudi Arabia, will be with the young woman this time. There they will join astronauts on board the AX-2 space mission. The rocket carrying them will be launched from the Kennedy Space Center in the United States.
The UAE became the first country in the Gulf region to launch a space mission in 2019. One of the country's astronauts went into space that year. The country's astronaut Hajja Al-Mansouri stayed on the ISS for 8 days.
After this, Emirati astronaut Sultan Al-Niyadi went into space. He became the first Arab astronaut to stay in space for 6 consecutive months.
Earlier in 1985, the then Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, became the first Arab Muslim to travel into space as part of a US mission.
Abdul Aziz was a Saudi Air Force pilot. From 2018, Saudi Arabia started the initiative to send astronauts into space again. This space mission was part of Yuvraj Salman's Vision 2030 agenda.
Note that Rayana Barnawi, the first Saudi woman in space, is a breast cancer researcher. They will be accompanied by astronaut Peggy Whitson and astronaut pilot John Schaffner on this 10-day space mission.
