The Dhaka Times Desk In 2022, more than 70 million people were internally displaced in the world. Which is 20 percent more than the previous year.
This information was recently highlighted in a joint report by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC) and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). IDMC chief Alexandra Bilak said the numbers were excessive.
He also said that the main reason for the high rate of displacement is the war in Ukraine. There are also floods in Pakistan, new and ongoing conflicts around the world and some slow and sudden disasters from America to the Pacific.
In addition to the displacement of 17 million people in Ukraine last year, at least 8 million people were forced to flee their homes due to severe floods in Pakistan.
1.65 million people are displaced in the sub-Saharan region, more than half of them due to conflict. Conflicts in Congo and Ethiopia are particularly responsible for that.
NRC chief Jan Egeland described the uptick in displacement as a perfect storm.
Disasters and conflicts have combined to exacerbate people's pre-existing vulnerabilities, he said. Because of this, mass displacement is taking place which has never been seen before.
