The Dhaka Times Desk As of Friday, the death toll from Cyclone Mokha in Myanmar has risen to 202. The worst affected are the people of the western coastal state of Rakhine who are now crying out for relief.
Many people are trying to repair the damaged houses but are unable to do so financially. They have not received any help from the junta government or international organizations so far.
Local residents said that the rise in commodity prices has poisoned their lives, and they are unable to afford any money to build damaged houses. In this condition, their life is not going on anymore. Local newspaper Irrawaddy reported that the state, which has been battered by communal riots, was completely devastated by the powerful cyclone.
Cyclone Mokha hit Myanmar's Rakhine with maximum wind speed of 195 kilometers per hour last Sunday afternoon. After wreaking havoc here, the storm swept over neighboring China state and Sagaing and Magui regions. About 90 percent of the houses in Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine State, have been damaged, local residents told the media. The storm blew off the roofs of most of the town's houses and flooded it with high tides.
