The Dhaka Times Desk Now a group of botanists in Chile have claimed that they have found the world's oldest tree. It is known that this tree is more than 5 thousand years old! That's why this tree is called 'Great Grandfather' in Chile.
A conifer tree with a four-meter-thick trunk known as the 'Great-Grandfather' may be the world's oldest living tree, scientists in Chile believe.
According to media sources, the radius of one of its roots, bent due to age, is 13 feet. It is about 92 feet in length. Previously, the record of the world's oldest tree was held by this 'Methuselah'. The Great Basin Bislicone Pine tree in California, USA is 4,850 years old.
However, to know how this great grandfather managed to survive the storm of adverse environment for so many years, various experiments are being done with his part from the tree. A group of scientists from the country have collected samples to find out the true age of this tree in the southern Chilean forest. Among them is Antonio Lara of Austral University in Argentina. He is also associated with Chile's Center for Climate Science and Resilience.
Antonio Lara, a researcher in this regard, said that this plant is mainly a northerner. No other tree has had the chance to survive for so many years.
It is known that this tree is located on the edge of a ditch in the forest of the Los Rio region (Chile's Alers Costero National Park) about 800 km south of Santiago, the capital of Chile. Scientists have reported that this simple evergreen tree is very similar to Phytozoa cupressodes. It is also known as a native tree in Latin America. Until recently, tourists used to walk for an hour deep into the forest to take pictures with the tree. However, the local administration has increased the number of rangers to guard this tree since the uproar started over its age.
The scientists also said that this tree was found by warden Anibal Henriquez in 1972 while roaming in this forest in Chile. Since then scientists became curious about this tree.
