The Dhaka Times Desk Recently, the Singapore-based science magazine 'Asian Scientist' published a list of 100 Asian scientists who have made significant contributions to research. The names of two Bangladeshi women have appeared in that list.
These two Bangladeshi women are Gausia Wahidunnesa Chowdhury and Senjuti Saha. The list, titled 'The Asian Scientists 100', was released on Sunday (June 11). This list has been made for the 8th time. Researchers and innovators who have played a role in tackling important issues ranging from climate change to glacial cycles and structural geology, and even space exploration, have been selected.
Gausia Wahidunnesa Chowdhury is a professor in the Department of Zoology at Dhaka University (DU). He holds a PhD in Zoology (Wetland Ecology) from the University of Cambridge. He is also a board member of WildTeam, an internationally renowned organization that works to protect Bangladesh's endangered natural resources. Gausia also received the 2022 WBLSD-ElZiver Foundation Award for his contribution to the conservation of aquatic ecosystems and endangered species in Bangladesh. He is currently working on the dangers of plastic pollution in waterways, reports Asian Scientist.
On the other hand, Bangladeshi woman Senjuti Saha is a microbiologist. He was included in this list for making special contributions to biology. This molecular genetics researcher is currently working at Child Health Research Foundation (CHRF) in Bangladesh. Senjuti Saha and her institute CHRF also unraveled the complete genome sequence of the new coronavirus from patient samples in Bangladesh.
He researched some diseases that affect children, such as dengue or chikungunya. He showed for the first time in the world that the chikungunya virus can block blood flow to the brain in children and can also cause meningitis in children.
As the first Bangladeshi, he was appointed as a board member of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative of the World Health Organization.
The 'Asian Scientist' website provides an overview of the scientists and their research. It can be seen that apart from Bangladesh, scientists from China, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Philippines, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam are in the list of one hundred scientists this year.
