A sudden fire broke out near gate 3 (A) of the airport exit at 9:20 pm on Wednesday (June 14). In a moment, the entire area was filled with smoke. Kolkata's Anandabazar newspaper reported that 5 engines of the airport and 4 fire engines took an hour to bring the fire under control.
On getting the information, two engines of the fire service reached the spot and started extinguishing the fire. Two more engines followed. Disaster response team reached the spot. The Kolkata airport authorities are yet to officially release the cause of the fire. However, sources said that the fire may have started from a short circuit.
At around 9:30 pm, at the security checking area near Gate 3 (A), smoke was suddenly seen coming out from the side of departure counter No. 16, some of the witnesses said. Due to the incident panic spread in the airport premises. However, two fire engines brought the fire under control after half an hour, airport authority sources said.
