Gunfire at Washington Navy Yard, casualties mount

The Dhaka Times Desk Police surrounded the Naval Office Building in Washington early Monday morning in search of a gunman who had already shot one person and threatened others. The Naval Office Building is not far from the Washington House and Capitol Hill. There were several casualties including police officers.

একশর’ও বেশী পুলিশ অফিসার এবং নেভাল অফিসার হেডকোয়ার্টার ভবনটি ঘিরে রেখেছিলো, যেখানে প্রায় ৩ হাজারেরও বেশী নাগরিক চাকুরি করেন। এই অপারেশনে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের উন্নত সিকিউরিটি ব্যবস্থা ফুটে উঠেছে এবং সেই সাথে আশেপাশের স্কুলগুলো কিছুক্ষণের জন্য তালাবদ্ধ করে রাখা হয়েছিলো। উল্লেখ্য যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সময় সকাল ৮ টা ২০ মিনিটে নেভী ইয়ার্ডের দক্ষিণপ্রান্ত থেকে একটি গুলির আওয়াজ শোনা যায়, এবং এরপরই তড়িৎ গতিতে ব্যবস্থা নেয়া হয় বলে নেভী তাদের টুইটারে বলেছে।

Navy officials then blocked the nearby roads to prevent the gunman from escaping. An officer said the gunman fired in self-defense. The officer who was shot is currently in surgery, while the gunman is presumed dead by officers. However, Chief Police Officer Lenier believes that there are still two more armed men. Police are looking for them.

“সম্ভবত আরও দুজন অস্ত্রধারী আছে, যাদের অবস্থান আমরা এখনও বের করতে পারিনি, তবে খুব দ্রুতই জানা যাবে বলে আশা করছি,” বলেছেন চীফ। তবে পুলিশের পক্ষ থেকে বলা হয়েছে ১০ জন আহত হয়েছে এর মাঝে দুজন পুলিশ অফিসারও রয়েছে।

Meanwhile, Obama has given strict orders to catch the criminals. "We still don't know who did it but it's important at this point to evacuate everyone to safety and provide medical treatment to those who have been shot," he said in a message.
