Nazmul and Mustafa, two talented students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), have created a special pair of glasses for the blind to walk. Both Nazmul and Mustafa gave a detailed description of the glasses.
About the features of the glasses, they said, the glasses are made based on the sound received. A blind person's task would be to turn on the glasses by pressing a button before walking. The glasses are programmed in such a way that if there is an obstacle in front, it will say 'Front', 'Right' for right, 'Left' for left to inform users of the exact location of the object. The intensity of the accent will also vary depending on the distance of the object. From which the user will get a complete idea about the distance of the object. Apart from day and night, two students said that it is possible to use the device even in thick fog. Asked about the accuracy of the device, they said that it can accurately determine the position of an object up to a distance of about three meters 98%. Blind people can also swim in water with the help of these glasses, they said.
In addition to guiding blind people, these glasses can be used for security purposes such as detecting intruders entering rooms, preventing car theft, and measuring distances. In the future, the device will have GPS technology and will be connected to smartphones, so that blind people can easily reach their specific destinations. Along with this, there will be a round-the-clock online monitoring system on blind people and all instructions will be given in Bengali for the convenience of users.
Meanwhile, when asked to know the cost of the device, they said that it cost only seven hundred rupees to make it. It uses 'ultrasonic sensor' for distance measurement, 'PIC' series microcontroller for data processing and common earphone as output device. It uses a mobile battery that can be used for thirty hours on a single charge. Even when the charge is over, it can be connected to the mobile phone through a special cable interface and can be kept active for several additional hours.
Nazmul Hasan is studying in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Techniques and Mustafa Kamal in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Both are third year students. They hope that the device will play a very important role in a poor and underdeveloped country like Bangladesh. In this regard, sincere cooperation and patronage of the government and research-friendly institutions has been requested. They said, "It is possible to reduce the cost further if we can market it."
