The event was organized to highlight the active participation of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields.

According to the World Bank's Bangladesh Country Gender Assessment 2021 report, only 14 percent of all STEM professionals in Bangladesh are women. According to data from the International Labor Organization (ILO), jobs for women that do not require STEM skills will be at risk over the next two decades. Although female students are doing better than male students at both primary and secondary levels, participation of female students in higher education is very low. According to research findings, only 38 percent of female students in public educational institutions and only 45 percent in private educational institutions study STEM subjects.

Bangladesh currently faces several tough challenges, ranging from economic stagnation to climate change, global pandemics and growing inequality. The role of science, technology, engineering and mathematics is crucial in meeting these challenges in this technology-dependent world. There is a direct relationship between the development of a country and the practice of science and technology. And participation of women in STEM professions is very important.

In his welcome address, Adrian Chadwick, South Asia Regional Director of the British Council said, “Gender inequality in the stem field is a global challenge. We are working to make a difference in 3 key stages of women's careers (Opportunity, Advancement and Leadership). Lack of adequate opportunities (access) hinders the relatively low representation of women in the stem field. Since 2018, we have supported 100 South Asian women to obtain Masters degrees in STEM at various UK universities. We are working in partnership with governments and universities in South Asia to ensure progress and help implement policies that will support the professional development of women in the stem field. We continue to identify key barriers to leadership development and identify ways to accelerate women's empowerment. Especially, we are playing a supporting role in the journey of 100 women of South Asia by overcoming various obstacles in their respective fields.

Panel discussions and a round table session were organized at the symposium. The results obtained from the round table meeting will contribute to the research. In addition, UK alumni involved in the STEM field will receive guidance in conducting their next year's activities. British Deputy High Commissioner and Development Director Matt Cannell said, “I am delighted to hear the views and ideas of potential professionals at this symposium for Bangladeshi women involved in the STEM field. According to the UK's new white paper, science and technology have a major role to play in sustaining development. We know that women play an important role in the technology-based world and that women need representation to build an equitable and sustainable future for all. The UK is pleased to work together with the Government of Bangladesh to implement inclusive policies. This policy will empower women and girls to develop to their full potential. Let's all work together to bridge the gap and create a future where gender inequality is no barrier to success.”

Professor Hasina Khan, member of the University Grants Commission, was the speaker in the panel discussion; Dhaka University Science Faculty Dean Professor Md. Abdus Chamad and Dhaka University Zoology Department Assistant Professor and Wild Team Board Member Dr. Alifa Bintha Haque.

President of Imperial College London Alumni Association of Bangladesh, Managing Director of Techster Satcom and Chairperson of Techno Green-Carbon Limited Anika Ali and Assistant Professor of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Department of Dhaka University Dr. Mushtaq Ibn Ayyub conducted the symposium. Educationists and Ministry representatives were also present on the occasion. News bulletins.

How to prevent dengue

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral fever. This fever is different from other viral or bacterial fevers. However, this fever is not contagious in any way. This viral fever can occur alone or in combination with other viruses (chikungunya, yellow fever, Burma forest, flu, respiratory syncytial) and bacteria (pneumococcus).

Dengue fever is divided into two categories depending on the severity of symptoms and fever.

1. Common dengue fever

2. Dengue fever with bleeding.

In the case of common dengue fever, the following symptoms are mainly seen-

1. Sudden high fever lasting 2 to 7 days.

2. Severe headache.

3. Pain behind the eyes.

4. Along with the fever, red rash appears all over the body.

5. Severe pain in whole body as well as back pain.

6. Nausea or vomiting.

7. A rash or red bumps on the skin.

In case of dengue fever with bleeding:

1. Bleeding from nose, mouth or vomiting with high fever within 2 to 48 hours.

2. Fluid accumulation in chest or abdomen along with fever.

If any of these symptoms appear, seek medical attention immediately.

On the other hand

Wait at home for the first 3 days of fever. On the other hand, sponge the whole body with water every now and then. This will reduce the level of fever. Drink enough water and rest. After that, if the fever does not decrease or if it continues to increase after some time, consult a doctor immediately.

Things to do to prevent Dengue:

1. Try to keep the surroundings of the house as clean as possible.

2. If there are flower tubs or broken plastic bottles, can shells, tires or polythene inside the house, clean them quickly and drain the accumulated water from the flower tubs.

3. Spray or fog at least 3 times a week to kill mosquitoes.

4. You can keep mosquito repellent cream with you while going out.

5. After evening, younger and older members of the household should use mosquito nets.

6. Clean up any accumulated rain water, as this is the time when Aedes mosquitoes lay their eggs.

7. On the other hand, you can use mats along with mosquito nets to avoid mosquito infestation.

8. Since Aedes mosquitoes bite during the day, it is important to avoid sleeping with mosquito nets while sleeping during the day. Source: https://dmpnews.org
