The British Council launched an 8-week online course under the 'Women in Leadership' programme

The Dhaka Times Desk The British Council recently launched an eight-week self-access leadership online course for the first cohort of women participating in its 'Women in Leadership' (WIL) programme.

The WIL 2024 program has been developed to integrate leadership and peer mentoring programs on gender equality. This program is being held online since 2020. The initiative aims to support emerging women leaders in building the necessary skills and capabilities to achieve leadership in ensuring gender equality and contributing to the development of women's leadership in their respective sectors and communities.

The British Council, in partnership with Clore Social Leadership and Wave Foundation and in collaboration with the Bangladesh Civil Service Women's Network (BCSWN), organized the Women in Leadership (WIL) program from January to March 2024. Through this programme, 30 emerging women leaders of BCSWN and 20 young women professionals from various sectors will get an opportunity to develop their leadership capabilities and skills through digital fellowship. These include training, online networking, mentorship and partnership working opportunities. The program will organize six virtual speed mentoring sessions, where prominent and renowned women activists of the country will share their experiences on gender equality, women's empowerment and social leadership among the participants. In addition, six webinars will be organized in this program. The webinars will give participants an opportunity to share and shed light on what they have learned, their ideas and experiences, and their achievements from the project. A day-long networking event (Will Summit) will be organized in Dhaka next March, where women in top roles will have an opportunity to interact with policy makers and civil society representatives on various important thematic areas.

Participants will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and enhance cross-cultural communication between their home countries and the UK through online courses and collaborations. Women in top roles will have the opportunity to highlight how they can accelerate the achievement of gender equality by taking the right steps to influence decision-making processes and innovation in their respective sectors. Participants will have the opportunity to develop their capacity to achieve gender equality and inclusion. Through which this program will contribute to the growth of social capital.

A group of fifty diverse participants will participate in the Will program. The team will include thirty government working women from the BCS Women's Network and twenty women professionals from the British Council Alumni Network. It is to be noted that on January 22, the first batch of thirty women government employees successfully participated in the virtual orientation program.

Sayla Farzana, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Public Administration said, “Gender equality and increasing women leadership within the cadre service is one of the goals of the BCS Women's Network. In keeping with this goal, this program is a significant step in the development of women leadership. Women continue to strive to increase representation at leadership levels. Through such efforts we are strengthening the Cadre Service as well as setting a positive example for future generations. This partnership initiative is in line with the mission of the BCS Women's Network. This project will contribute to creating a fair environment for empowering professionals.”

British Council Bangladesh Director Tom Missa said, “Various data shows that women are under-represented in leadership roles in other sectors including politics, entertainment, business and IT. The British Council is proud to contribute to the development of women's leadership through the Women in Leadership (WIL) programme. Through this initiative, in recent years we have been able to reach 304 women in top roles in South Asia, including Bangladesh. The program is run in partnership with Clore Social Leadership (UK) and Wave Foundation (Bangladesh). Participants in this program have access to training, mentorship and networking as well as digital fellowship.”

How to prevent dengue

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral fever. This fever is different from other viral or bacterial fevers. However, this fever is not contagious in any way. This viral fever can occur alone or in combination with other viruses (chikungunya, yellow fever, Burma forest, flu, respiratory syncytial) and bacteria (pneumococcus).

Dengue fever is divided into two categories depending on the severity of symptoms and fever.

1. Common dengue fever

2. Dengue fever with bleeding.

In the case of common dengue fever, the following symptoms are mainly seen-

1. Sudden high fever lasting 2 to 7 days.

2. Severe headache.

3. Pain behind the eyes.

4. Along with the fever, red rash appears all over the body.

5. Severe pain in whole body as well as back pain.

6. Nausea or vomiting.

7. A rash or red bumps on the skin.

In case of dengue fever with bleeding:

1. Bleeding from nose, mouth or vomiting with high fever within 2 to 48 hours.

2. Fluid accumulation in chest or abdomen along with fever.

If any of these symptoms appear, seek medical attention immediately.

On the other hand

Wait at home for the first 3 days of fever. On the other hand, sponge the whole body with water every now and then. This will reduce the level of fever. Drink enough water and rest. After that, if the fever does not decrease or if it continues to increase after some time, consult a doctor immediately.

Things to do to prevent Dengue:

1. Try to keep the surroundings of the house as clean as possible.

2. If there are flower tubs or broken plastic bottles, can shells, tires or polythene inside the house, clean them quickly and drain the accumulated water from the flower tubs.

3. Spray or fog at least 3 times a week to kill mosquitoes.

4. You can keep mosquito repellent cream with you while going out.

5. After evening, younger and older members of the household should use mosquito nets.

6. Clean up any accumulated rain water, as this is the time when Aedes mosquitoes lay their eggs.

7. On the other hand, you can use mats along with mosquito nets to avoid mosquito infestation.

8. Since Aedes mosquitoes bite during the day, it is important to avoid sleeping with mosquito nets while sleeping during the day. Source: https://dmpnews.org
