Kurigram representative Adapting to the global climate change, the people of 25 chars of Khas, Kachakata, Kedar, Nunkhawa and Kaliganj Unions of Vallabh Nageshwari Upazila of Kurigram are fighting and surviving. By overcoming drought, flood and winter, these pastoral people are becoming self-reliant. The non-governmental organization RDRS has extended its support to Char residents to improve the quality of life of the backward and poor people of the society.
Going to Char Balrampur village of Khas Union of Vallav in Nageshwari Upazila, various activities of climate change projects can be seen. After the paved road of Gabtali Bazar, after crossing the Dudhkumore river for 1.5 km, Char Balrampur is reached. As soon as you get off the boat, you can see the cultivation of sweet pumpkins on the sandy beach. Houses have been elevated above the flood plain, the highest elevation in previous years' floods. There is a vegetable garden with papaya in the upper house. House to house installation of tube wells for safe water and sanitary latrines to protect the environment. Solar panels are installed on the roof of the house. Kohinoor, Mamata, Nabijan and Anwara of Char Balrampur village said that there is no possibility that their house will be submerged by flood water as the foundation of their house is raised. Earlier, they suffered a lot due to the annual floods, causing great loss of lives and property. But they have benefited in various ways through the RDRS Climate Change Project. They have received various trainings so that they can now easily adapt themselves to the adverse effects of the environment.
KM Marufuzzaman, Project Manager of Climate Change Project of RDRS said, We all have to try to adapt to global climate change. Through this project, we have undertaken special programs to adapt to climate change in 25 char areas of 5 unions of Nageshwari upazila like Char Balrampur village. He also informed that 50 Village Disaster Committees have been formed through the project, with 1000 members, awareness strategies are being increased. Elevation of a total of 60 houses, construction of 2 km connecting road, provision of cement poles to 60 people for repair of houses in high rise houses, provision of sanitary latrines to 60 families, 25 tube wells to ensure safe water, training including provision of solar panels to 243 people, compost pits for production of organic fertilizers for 100 people Created and trained members. Apart from this, 2.5 kilometers of trees have been planted in homesteads, roads, schools, college grounds and land. Providing cattle for food security and providing food and training for them to 16 families, providing training for maintaining and maintaining rice bank in the homes of members for food security to 20 families, helping and also training 10 people in paddy field fish farming.
In this way, local NGOs are making these needy people self-reliant. With the help of not only NGOs, but also the government, these people of Char can easily overcome their daily lack of companionship. Fish farms, poultry farms are being developed in this region. The youth of the area no longer sit at home. They don't spend time chatting with friends. They are building farms on their own initiative to become self-sufficient. So the shortage of people of one time is now flying day by day. New generations are coming forward in search of action - they have vowed to give the nation a better future.
