Dhaka Times Desk Bapex, a company controlled by Petrobangla, has identified new oil levels in the old oil fields of Kailastila and Haripur in Sylhet. These two oil fields have oil reserves of Tk 45 thousand crores.
Petrobangla said three new oil levels have been identified in Kailastila, Sylhet's old oil field, while oil reserves have also increased in Haripur. However, after 26 years of discovery, Petrobangla announced that a new oil field had been discovered. Petrobangla is saying that this oil will be extracted within the next one year. Between the two oil fields, Kailashtila is expected to produce 44 million barrels of oil. However, 11 million barrels of oil can be lifted from the Haripur field. Chairman of Petrobangla said that the price of extracted oil will be 42 to 45 thousand crores.
However, in these two cases, there was evidence of gas reserves at a total of 11 levels, but nothing was said in detail about it. The reason being said that although the gas reserves are known, more data needs to be collected. Apart from this, as the pressure inside the gas field is not known, the matter is not clear to Bapex and Petrobangla. On the other hand, the managing director of Bapex said that there is a weakness in data collection in the recently completed three-dimensional survey.

Chairman of Petrobangla said, for the first time two oil fields are being officially announced. Although the mine is old, evidence of new reserves has been found. He congratulated the BAPEX team conducting the three-dimensional seismic survey for this work. He also announced that three-dimensional seismic surveys will be conducted in large gas fields to find oil reserves.
Chairman of Petrobangla also said that oil has been found in these two gas fields. Out of the determined oil potential, 44 million barrels of oil can be produced in Kailashtila, assuming an 80 percent recovery factor. And considering the same plant factor, 11 million barrels of oil can be lifted from Sylhet's Haripur field. He said that by analyzing 12 main layers in Kailashtila, seven layers of gas, four layers of oil and one layer of gas and oil reserves have been jointly identified. On the other hand, six main layers were analyzed in Haripur, gas reserves in four layers and oil reserves in one layer were confirmed. However, in this case, there may be another layer of oil, he said. The chairman said that there are plans to dig one appraisal well and three development wells in Kailashtila and one appraisal well and two development wells in Haripur in these two fields.
Petrobangla claims that it is possible to extract 55 million barrels of oil from here. Now the country's annual fuel oil demand is 68 lakh metric tons. As such, if it is possible to extract all the oil, the country's needs will be met for a little more than a year. Petrobangla is claiming that the economic value of this oil is 42 to 45 thousand crores as per the current market price. It is said that the oil will be extracted within a year, since Bapex does not have the experience of oil extraction, the work will be done with a contractor. At that time, the chairman of Petrobangla indicated to Gasprom to extract oil. Before this, oil was discovered in Haripur, Sylhet in 1986. Until 1994, 196 BCF of gas and 544 thousand barrels of oil were extracted from there. At one stage the oil pressure is reduced and the extraction operation is stopped and the well face is sealed (closed).
Geologist Professor Badrul Imam, who was present at the press conference, said in response to a question from the journalists, that BAPEX discovered oil reserves in this area of Sylhet in 1986. However, due to the lack of sincerity of the government of that time, BAPEX could not match itself. Then a foreign company came and extracted oil from Haripur and destroyed the field within a few days. Bapex deserves to be congratulated for bringing the matter forward again by analyzing the data. There is already proven oil in the area. However, expressing inability to comment on reserves, he said, looking at the world's oil-rich countries, this oil is very little. He said, Saudi Arabia produces eight million barrels of oil per day. As such, it will take at least a week for them to pick up the reserves that Petrobangla is demanding. Still we have to be happy with limited resources.
In a press conference, the managing director of Bapex said that it cannot be said that gas reserves have decreased after receiving oil. Because we do not know what the pressure will be inside these two gas fields. Reserves may also increase with gas extraction. He said, we have some weakness in the data collection of Sylhet gas field. We could not survey at a certain depth. Apart from this, we could not collect any information from there because of the cantonment and city on this field. We could not conduct any survey in the 25 to 30 km area.
