The Dhaka Times Desk The verdict in the sensational 10-truck weapons case will be announced on Thursday. For this reason, strict security measures have been taken in the adjacent areas including the Chittagong Court Building, Central Jail.
Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge and Special Tribunal-1 Judge SM Mojibur Rahman will announce the verdict of this case. In this sensational incident, two cases were registered under Arms Act and Smuggling Act. It is said that the judgment may be announced in both the cases today.
Meanwhile, one of the defendants in this case, then Industries Minister Maulana Motiur Rahman Nizami and former Minister of State for Home Lutfuzzaman Babar were taken from Dhaka Central Jail to Chittagong yesterday evening.
Tight security has been ensured in the entire area from Chittagong Jail to the court building premises based on the judgment of 10 truckloads of weapons. During this time the members of SB, DB and court police will perform their duties. Besides, more than 300 policemen including SB sweeping team, DB bomb disposal team, camera unit will be deployed. 50 accused in the Arms Act case and 52 accused in the Special Powers Act case, out of which 50 are accused in both cases. After further investigation, 11 of the 52 accused in the smuggling case accused in the supplementary charge sheet have been arrested and are in jail. 29 people are on bail but 12 are absconding.
Among the 50 accused in the arms case, 10 have been arrested, 28 are on bail. 12 people are absconding in this case too.
According to the order of the charge sheet of the case, the accused are - smuggler Hafizur Rahman, smuggler Din Mohammad, trawler hirer Haji Md. Abdus Sobhan, Dildar Hossain Chowdhury, Sanwar Hossain Chowdhury, Maryam Begum member alias Badni, Abdul Aziz, Jasim Uddin, Md. Akhtar, Md. Jahangir, Nurul Abshar aka Abshar member, labor supplier Arju Mia Raofe Arju Pagla, Mojibur Rahman Bhulu, Ezahar Mia, Sheikh Mohammad, Fazal Ahmed Chowdhury, Md. Akbar Ali, Badsha Mia, Osman Mistry, Abdul Mannan, Kabir Ahmed, Md. Rafiq, Manjurul Alam, Monir Ahmed, Abdul Khalek, Pradeep Kumar Das, Noor Nabi, Babul Mia, Saleh Zahoor, Abdur Rahim Majhi, Md. Shahjahan, Abdus Sobhan, Abdus Sabur, Shah Alam, Sirajul Islam, Helal Uddin, Firoz Ahmed, Saifuddin, Kamal Miah, Ex-NSI Field Officer Akbar Hussain, Ex-Director (Security) NSI Wing Commander (Retd) Sahabuddin, Ex-Director General (NSI) Abdur Rahim, Former Director General of NSI Major General (Retd) Rezzakul Haider Chowdhury, Former NSI Deputy Director (Technical) Major (Retd) Liaquat Hossain, Former MD of CUFL Mohsin Uddin Talukder, Former GM (Administration) of CUFL KM Enamul Haque, former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar, ULFA military commander Paresh Barua, former Additional Industries Secretary Nurul Amin, former Industries Minister and Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Matiur Rahman Nizami, Safiqur Rahman and Abul Hossain.
11 accused have been arrested in both the cases and are in jail. They are - Motiur Rahman Nizami, Lutfuzzaman Babar, Rezzakul Haider Chowdhury, Abdur Rahim, Shahabuddin, Liakat Hossain, Mohsin Uddin Talukder, Akbar Hossain Khan, KM Enamul Haque, Hafizur Rahman and Din Mohammad.
The 12 absconding accused are Nurul Amin, Paresh Barua, Mohammad Sirajul Islam, Helal Uddin, Abdur Rahim Majhi, Mohammad Sabur, Mohammad Shajahan, Shah Alam, Haji Sobhan, Pradeep Kumar Das, Babul Mia and Noor Nabi.
After the witness-examination was over on January 13, the court fixed January 30 as the date for announcing the verdict. After 10 years of the incident, common people are eagerly waiting to hear the verdict of 10 truck weapons case.
It is to be noted that on the night of April 1, 2004, 10 trucks of weapons and ammunition were seized from the JT Ghat of Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL).
