The Dhaka Times Desk On Monday night, bodies of 11 people who died in fire on a moving boat in Surma river were recovered. More than half a hundred are still missing.
On Monday night, 11 people died after a moving boat caught fire in Pratappur between Chatak-Dwara Bazar upazila on Surma river. The body was recovered. There is no way to recognize the faces of the remaining 10 people except one woman.
The bodies have been burnt in such a way that there is no way to recognize them. Although 15-16 hours have passed since the boat caught fire, the relatives were not found till yesterday night. Everyone present was shocked to see the dead bodies. As the bodies found in Betura village of Chatak of Sunamganj were not found on Tuesday, the local administration finally buried the bodies in a local government cemetery after keeping samples for DNA testing under their supervision. A missing female passenger has been identified. One of the people who was burnt to death is the wife of Abdul Hasim of Panch Hata village of Khaliajuri Upazila of Netrakona.
Meanwhile, more than half a hundred passengers are missing as the boat sank after the fire. Fire service divers and local residents rescued the victims on Monday night and yesterday till Tuesday. The rescue team of BIWTC from Dhaka reached the spot at 7 pm yesterday to rescue the others who were missing. However, due to thick fog, they could not start rescue operations at night. It has been informed that the rescue operation will start again from Wednesday morning.
It is to be noted that this tragic accident took place on Monday night when the passengers were returning from Bholaganj in Sylhet's Companyganj to Netrokona and Kishoreganj by boat. The fate of many passengers is still uncertain.
