In the past, August 15 was celebrated despite various obstacles, but now that is not the case. August 15 has been officially observed as the National Mourning Day since 2008 during the last caretaker government's court ruling. However, after the BNP-led four-party coalition came to power in 2001, the National Day of Mourning was canceled on August 15. Later, the Awami League and the grand coalition government came to power and declared August 15 as National Mourning Day and declared a public holiday on this day.

It should be noted that on August 15, 1975, apart from the then President Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, his wife Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib, son Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal, infant Sheikh Russell, daughter-in-law Sultana Kamal, Rozi Jamal, brother Sheikh Abu Nasser, sister-in-law Abdur Rab took the killer's bullet that day. Serniabat, the lives of nephew Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani, his pregnant wife Arju Mani and Colonel Jamil who rushed to save Bangabandhu's life. Bangabandhu's two daughters, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, escaped from the hands of the assassins because they were out of the country.

On the occasion of the martyrdom anniversary of the father of the nation, the Awami League and its constituent organizations have organized a day-long Quran reading, memorial meeting and discussion meeting.

National flag will be kept at half-mast in government, semi-government, autonomous institutions, educational institutions and private buildings at sunrise on National Day of Mourning today. The program also includes Milad and Doa Mahfil organized by Mahila Awami League at Bangabandhu Bhavan premises. Also, Awami League has centrally instructed everyone to organize milad and iftar mahfil in all wards, unions and districts of the country except Bad Asr.
