The police attack took place on Friday afternoon at Shahbagh Ganajagran Mancha protest rally while protesting against the attack on stage workers by Chhatra League-Youth League last Thursday night. Due to the police action, the meeting also ended. At that time, the police lathi-charged the workers of Ganajagran stage and several people were injured.
The Gana Jagran Manch said that Chhatra League and Jubo League workers ambushed the workers of the Gana Jagran Manch in Shahbagh on Thursday night. When they went to file a case at the police station, the stage workers were attacked for the second time. In protest of this incident, Gana Jagran Manch announced to hold a protest rally on Friday afternoon. At the same time, an organization called Muktijoddha Sangsad Ishan Command called for a protest rally in Shahbagh. Because of which the police requested both sides not to hold a rally. Disregarding the police order, both sides tried to take a position at Shahbagh and the police dispersed them by baton-charging them. At least 10 people were injured and 7 people were arrested.
The cultural organization Udichi has condemned the heavy lathi charge by the police on the Ganajagran Manch workers. On the other hand, Imran H Sarkar of Ganajagran Manch said in his response to the media, 'The way the police attacked our workers, it is scandalous in any democratic and civilized society.' He strongly condemned it.
