No more SIMs can be bought at will

Dhaka Times Desk The people of Bangladesh are so crazy about using mobile phones that they buy dozens of mobile SIM cards and fill their pockets. When a good SIM offer comes, use it. Or whoever needs to ring from that SIM. But this time BTRC has blocked. They are going to regulate a certain amount of SIMs a person can buy.

It is known that the opportunity to buy SIM at individual level will be closed soon. Telecom Regulatory Authority - BTRC is going to make a new policy to prevent the misuse of SIMs for various criminal activities including stopping illegal VoIP business by giving the opportunity to buy maximum 4 SIMs from an operator.

A draft policy has already been made so that customers cannot buy SIMs at will in the future. The policy allows a customer to purchase a maximum of four SIMs from an operator. Acting Chairman of BTRC Ghiyasuddin Ahmed said that the policy will be sent to the Ministry of Telecommunication for the government's approval in the next few days. According to the draft policy, a customer can purchase a maximum of four SIMs from each operator. And if this policy is approved, a customer will get the opportunity to buy a maximum of 24 SIM cards from six operators in the country. However, it is reported that there is no restriction on the number of SIM purchases at the organization level. As a result, if a SIM is purchased in the name of an organization, that customer will not fall under this rule.

Meanwhile, many officials of BTRC think that the opportunity to buy a maximum of 24 SIMs is also excessive. So they are in favor of reducing this number further. According to some officials who did not want to be named, the opportunity to buy a maximum of ten SIMs with four SIMs from one operator is enough. Because in most cases ten SIMs are not required for one person. However, since there is a ban on purchasing SIMs for children under 18 years of age, as the parents have to purchase SIMs in their own name, the opportunity to purchase SIMs has been kept in mind, said another BTRC official.

Mobile phone operators do not agree with this policy and logic of limiting the number of SIM purchases at the customer level. According to them, such policies will adversely affect the growth of the entire sector. Many of them think that it is a violation of personal freedom of customers. However, the BTRC authorities are unwilling to accept such a thing. According to them, hundreds of SIMs used in illegal activities found in recent raids by BTRC and other law enforcement agencies were found to be registered in individual names. And so in the future, the rules are being changed a little so that SIMs are not used in criminal activities. And genuine customers will not be affected at all by the implementation of this policy.
