The Dhaka Times Desk Last week we reported that the government was wasting crores of rupees by constructing Achatha culverts. And the news that I will give today is exactly the opposite. Due to the poor condition of culverts and roads, the communication system has been cut off in the remote areas of Mirzaganj and Dhunt.
Roads and bridges are in disrepair at various places. Dhunat and Sashirbari have lost communication. The suffering of passengers is increasing in traveling on potholed and dilapidated roads. On the other hand, accidents are increasing. Despite the demand to repair the impassable road, no work is being done.
Mirzaganj (Patuakhali)
The iron bridge over the Pargerdhan river near Doklakhali of Mirzaganj upazila and Jalisha Bazar of neighboring Betagi upazila has been in a dangerous condition for a long time. Sometimes the sleeper of the bridge breaks and falls into the river. As a result of non-renovation or repair, the people of that area are using betel nut trees for movement. Hundreds of thousands of pedestrians in two upazilas have suffered. Mirzaganj Upazila Engineer Dewan Md. Abdus Sabur said, the iron bridge over Pargerdhan river is very old. Betagi Upazila Engineer will be called in this regard. So that construction arrangements are made for the convenience of two upazilas very soon.
Dhunat (Bogra)
Transport communication has been severed due to the collapse of the connecting road on both sides of the Gosaibari bridge on the Shahrabari Naughat road in Dhunte of Bogra.
According to local sources, the connecting road on both sides of the bridge on the eastern side of Gosaibari Bazar on the Ghat road of Dhunat-Shahrabari Yamuna river has collapsed. In the past few days, the flood water has risen and overflowed the Cowhati canal. Due to the strong current of water, the connection road of the bridge crossing the canal has collapsed and turned into a death trap. River Yamuna flows about two kilometers east of the bridge. Shahrabarighat on the west bank of the river. For almost 40 years, annual lease settlement was given from the Ghat District Council. Boats ply from Shahrabari Ghat to various areas of the country including Baishakhi, Kalibari, Majhira, Bohail, Keshta, Shankarpur, Dhara Barsha, Shanpacha, Natuarpara. About 20 engine boats transport passengers and goods from Shahrabari Ghat every day. Thousands of people of the area travel to different parts of the country daily by boat. All forms of transport communication are cut off due to the collapse of the bridge connecting the only road to Naughat. Besides Gosaibari Bazar, over the flood control dam of Yamuna River, vehicles ply in Sariakandi and Kazipur upazilas. But the locals have not been able to communicate directly for the past one week. As a result, hundreds of thousands of people in the area are suffering. Gosaibari is the oldest market on the west side of that bridge. A market is held there two days a week. Market traders are suffering due to the bridge problem. There is no alternative way to travel by boat. Because of this, traders have to suffer in the transportation of goods. The suffering of people of various professions including students of the area has reached the extreme. Biren Chandra, the sailor of Shahrabari Naughat, said that the suffering of boat passengers has increased due to disruption in road communication. The movement of people has decreased.
Upazila Engineer Salahuddin said, the connection road of Gosaibari bridge is being arranged for the movement of people by leaving bamboo pilings and sandbags. Besides, a letter has been sent asking for allocation of funds for the renovation of connecting roads.
Mohammadpur (Magura): The historic Grand Trunk Road at Mohammadpur in Magura has become completely impassable. Even in 40 years of independence, the oldest road has not been touched by development. As a result, the important Grand Trunk Road has now become a bane in the lives of the locals. Dangerous road trips are going on every day. The entire 15 km long brick (Haringbon) road has become unusable for vehicular and public movement. Big holes have been created in the entire road due to the rise of brick and sand. Somewhere there is no sign of brick on the 5-7 yard road. It looks like dirt road. Even though the situation has been created for a long time, the people's representatives and related departments are not worried about reducing the suffering of the local people.
Bagha (Rajshahi): Traffic has become dangerous on Arani-Rustampur road of Bagha upazila of Rajshahi. While traveling through that dangerous road, the locals are constantly suffering from accidents. Besides, the condition of road carpeting is even worse. As a result, thousands of people in that area are facing endless suffering while traveling with the risk of death as there is no alternative route. The culvert on that road has become a death trap due to lack of maintenance. Accidents occur regularly when people and vehicles travel over that culvert.
Upazila executive officer Munshi. Moniruzzaman said, I am performing additional duties in Bagha upazila. I will present the next district monthly development coordination meeting for the renovation of that road.
Sarishabari (Jamalpur): The flood situation of Sarishabari upazila remains unchanged. The flood water in Yamuna, Jhenai, Subarnakhali and Jharkata rivers has reduced slightly. At Bahadurabad and Sirajganj ghat points, Yamuna river water is still flowing above the danger level. Although the flood water has receded in Sarishabari Municipality, almost the entire arable land of Satpoa and Kamrabad Unions and more than half of Pingna, Aona, Pogaldigha and Bhatara Unions are under water. Floodwaters entered most of the villages causing unbearable suffering in public life. In the meantime, more than one and a half hundred villages have been flooded, and two lakh people of the upazila have been trapped in water.
