Bangladesh won one silver and one bronze medal in Mathematics Olympiad

The Dhaka Times Desk Students of Dhaka College are members of the Bangladesh Mathematics Team in the 55th International Mathematical Olympiad Noor Mohammad Shafiullah Silver medalist and student of Mymensingh District School Adib Hasan Won bronze medal.

Apart from Noor Mohammad Shafiullah and Adeeb Hasan, more participants from Bangladesh in the 55th International Math Olympiad were Sajid Akhtar aka Turya, student of BL Government High School, Rajganj, Asif-e-Elahi of Sylhet Government Pilot High School, Md. of Mymensingh District School. Sanjid Anwar and Mutasim alias Mim of Rajshahi College. All of them have received honorable recognition.

The score line of the Bangladesh team for Bangladesh in the Olympics was a record for Bangladesh! Noor Mohammad Shafiullah of Bangladesh team got 22 marks, Adeeb Hasan 16, Sanjid Anwar 14, Asif-e-Elahi 14, Sajid Akhtar 10 and Mutasim 8 marks. Total 84 marks of Bangladesh. This is the highest team score of Bangladesh team till now.

Bangladesh Mathematics Olympiad Committee President Professor Jamilur Reza Chowdhury said, "Congratulations to all the team. This time we have done best result in 10 years in IMO as a team. The silver medal was what we expected. The new team members have done well. Hopefully, they will do better in the future.'

Meanwhile, Bangladesh team leader and coach Mahbub Majumder is happy with the team's results but not completely satisfied. In Prothom Alo, he said, 'Our students have an opportunity to do better. Their results are not good due to lack of hard work.' He hoped that the students would practice more diligently in the future.

Let's take a look at who is at the top in this year's Olympiad-

China maintained its top position among the teams with a total of 201 points out of 101 countries. Chinese students bagged five gold and one silver medals. The United States and Taiwan are ranked second and third respectively with 193 and 192 marks. Among the South Asian countries, India is ranked 39th with 110 points, Bangladesh is ranked 52nd with 84 points, Sri Lanka is ranked 54th with 82 points and Pakistan is ranked 75th with 50 points. Three contestants showed exceptional achievement by getting 42 out of a possible 42 marks. They are Alexander Gunning of Australia, Jiang Gao of China and Po Sheng Wu of Taiwan.

Note that 560 students from 101 countries participated in this year's Math Olympiad. Among them 504 male students and 56 female students. A total of 49 people got gold medals, 113 people got silver medals and 133 people got bronze medals. Apart from this, 151 people received honorable recognition. A total of 42 exams are held at IMO.
