The Dhaka Times Desk ATM skimmers are perpetrators of crimes committed through malicious devices at ATM booths. A new panic is the name of ATM scams across the globe. By placing various devices in the ATM booth, such scammers take the pin number of the customer's ATM card and steal money through it.
How do ATM skimmers organize their crimes?
An ATM skimmer typically uses two components. The first component they insert into the ATM card slot. When you insert your ATM card into the slot, it copies your card details. The process of inserting the card into the slot seems quite normal. But in the meantime, all your card information has been copied to the device's magnetic strip. And the second component is a camera. This camera is placed in such a place that it can better capture the keypad of the ATM slot. This makes it possible to capture the customer's pincode. Later, ATM skimmers use all the information of these two components to create fake cards and use them to withdraw money from various ATM booths. Day by day such scammers are becoming more technologically advanced. At present they are placing a thin paper on the keypad of various ATM slots or placing a fake number pad. Bluetooth devices are provided in this type of keypad. Through this it is possible to accept customer pincode. Customers are not getting hold of such keypads. As a result they are falling prey to ATM skimmers.
How can ATM skimmers catch the device?
By following some tricks, you can understand by yourself whether any type of skimmer device is used in the slot of the ATM booth you are using.
1. If the card gets a little stuck while inserting the card into the card reader slot, it means that the skimmer device is installed inside it, which will capture the external information of your card. A good card slot will be normal according to the size of the card at once. Inserting an external device there causes some problems.
2. Before inserting your card into the slot machine, take a good look to see if anything seems unusual. Because if you withdraw money regularly, the ATM booth will be quite familiar to you. But if there is a skimmer changing the keypad or using a thin transparent paper on the keypad then you will notice it.
3. Note if any unusual cameras are used inside the ATM booth. Take a good look around if anything looks unusual to your eyes.
Follow some precautions:
1. While using the keypad while withdrawing money from the ATM booth, cover the keypad with your other hand so that hidden cameras cannot capture your code. Also take a good look at the keypad. Note whether this keypad was present during the previous transaction.
2. Monitor your transaction account regularly. Various online banking in our country provide mobile alerts to their customers for every transaction. Keep this service enabled to ensure the security of your account.
