The Dhaka Times Desk Former Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami Professor Ghulam Azam (92) passed away. Bangabandhu passed away under treatment in the prison cell of Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital at 10.10 pm on Thursday.
Jamaat-e-Islami's former emir Professor Ghulam Azam Bangabandhu, who was sentenced to 90 years in prison for crimes against humanity, died while undergoing treatment in the prison cell at Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital.
Earlier, Ghulam Azam, who was being treated in the prison cell of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital, became seriously ill and was taken to the CCU. He was then put on life support.
Meanwhile, the jail authorities have handed over the body of Golam Azam to his family after the post-mortem. However, it is not known when Ghulam Azam's sons will be buried as they are out of the country. His body is kept in the cold room.
It is to be noted that in 1971, the International Criminal Tribunal-1 sentenced Ghulam Azam to 90 years for crimes against humanity during the Mahar Liberation War. In the verdict, the tribunal said, the scale of his crime was punishable by death. But considering his age and physical condition, he was given this sentence instead of death sentence.
