According to media reports, all the hearts previously used in this type of surgery were hearts that continued to beat even after the donor was confirmed to be brain dead.
But a team of surgeons at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, Australia, claims to have performed successful surgery for the first time using a 'dead' heart that had stopped beating at least 20 minutes earlier. BBC news.
"He feels like he's 10 years younger, and he's literally a 'different person'," said 57-year-old Michele Gribilas, a patient who received a 'dead' heart for the first time.
Until recently, the heart was the only organ in the human body that could never be used after it stopped beating. They were no longer used because a heart that stopped beating lost its ability to circulate blood. Previously, beating hearts were usually collected from brain-dead people and kept on ice for up to 4 hours before being transplanted into the patient's body.
What surgeons in Sydney have done is to restore a beating heart by placing it in a device called a 'heart-in-a-box'. Basically, the device kept the heart warm and brought back the heartbeat and a kind of liquid was also used through the device to prevent the heart muscles from getting damaged. According to the news, this surgery was done on the body of heart patient Gribilus two months ago. Surgeons claim to have performed two other similar successful transplant surgeries since Gribylus.
