Romania's policymakers have finally ordered a law change to save a sick retired military dog, according to media reports. According to news agency AFP, the country's authorities gave such an order last Monday.
The 5-year-old dog, named Max, served two tours of military duty in war-torn Afghanistan, media reports said. He has successfully carried out risky tasks like detecting explosives. But the dog is now retired from the military. But that dog is currently sick. Due to the lack of legal provisions in Romania regarding the care of dogs retired from the military, it is not possible to provide the dog with medical care. In such a context, a massive appeal was made online to save sick Max. About 27,000 signatures were also collected in favor of this petition.
In the wake of such widespread publicity about Max, the country's Defense Minister Mircea Dusa issued an order to officially take care of dogs retired from military service. He said that it will be implemented this week. Now Max has been adopted by an animal lover. Others have also come forward to provide financial support for his treatment. Such compassion for animals is not often seen.
