Tajhat Rajbari is the historical palace of Rangpur. It is a historical palace located in Tajhat near Rangpur city. It is now used as a museum. It is an attractive place for tourists. This historical palace is located 3 km south-east from Rangpur city.
According to its history, the palace was built by Maharaja Kumar Gopal Lal Roy in the early 20th century. Maharaja Gopal Roy was a Hindu and was a goldsmith by profession. It is said that the area is called Tajhat because of its mesmerizing 'Taj' or crown.
From 1984-1991 AD, the palace was used as a branch or bench of the Rangpur High Court, Bangladesh Supreme Court. In 1995, the Archeology Department of the Government of Bangladesh declared the palace as a protected structure and architecture. Realizing the historical importance of this building, the Bangladesh government moved the Rangpur museum to the second floor in 2005.
The palace is about 210 feet wide and four stories high. Its architectural style is believed to be inspired by ancient Mughal architecture as evidenced by the mosque-like appearance of a large dome in the center and sprawling buildings on either side. There are a total of 31 staircases, each made of Italian-style marble. The entire floor from the stairs up to the museum is made of the same stone. There is also a secret staircase at the back of the palace. The beautiful fountain of the palace is somewhat tarnished by the passage of time, its white marble and greenish design still charms people with its charm. It is said that this palace was built for the Queen.
