On October 1, 2013, the International Criminal Tribunal-1 sentenced Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury to death on four charges of murdering Nutan Chandra Singh, the owner of the Kundeshwari pharmacy in Raujan, Chittagong, mass murder in a Hindu settlement in Sultanpur and Unsatarpara, and kidnapping and murdering an Awami League leader and his son in Hathajari.
After a long year and 9 months, the maximum sentence was upheld in all of the charges numbered 3, 5, 6 and 8 in the appeal verdict. The Appellate Division also upheld the sentence of 20 years imposed by the Tribunal on charges Nos. 2 and 4. But he was acquitted after allowing an appeal against the 20-year sentence on charge number 7. The sentence of five years' imprisonment on charges 17 and 18 given by the tribunal has also been upheld.
Meanwhile, the security system has been strengthened across the country before the verdict.
