The Dhaka Times Desk Yakub Memon, sentenced to death in the Mumbai serial bomb case, said before his execution that he was being 'punished for the sins of his brother'.
Yakub Memon repeated the same thing before his execution. He said, he got the punishment for his brother's sin. He repeatedly claimed his innocence, but before his death, Yakub admitted that his 'brother' was involved in the Mumbai attacks. He said, 'I have to bear the burden of my brother's sins.' His lawyer Anil Gedam told Anandabazar newspaper.
According to media reports, even a few hours before his death, Memon did not want to believe that he was going to be hanged. He hoped that his plea to the President would be granted. He repeatedly claimed his innocence to the jail staff. He tells them the same thing again and again, 'He has to bear the burden of his brother's sins.' But there was no last defense. His death sentence was executed in West Bengal's Nagpur jail last Thursday morning.
Lawyer Anil Gedam said, when he went to meet Yakub, Yakub repeatedly said that, 'I have to be punished for the sins of my brother.' Yaqub said, 'May begunah hun.' Even before the hanging, when the Maulvi came and asked him to apologize for his crime, Yakub maintained his innocence.
It should be noted that 257 people were killed in serial bomb blasts in Mumbai in 1993. Yakub Memon was accused in that case. After the last legal process, the president of the country also rejected the plea for mercy and he was hanged.
