The Dhaka Times Desk The first university of the country Dhaka University was established in 1921. If you look at the overall infrastructure and management of this university starting from its inception, it will be seen that the majority of the total land of the university premises has been spent not for the construction of educational buildings or academic buildings, but for the accommodation of students and teachers. 60 percent of the land of Dhaka University campus is now residential area, 25 percent of the area is covered by roads and administrative buildings. And only 15 percent land is under educational buildings or academic buildings.
As much as the Dhaka University authorities are under pressure to construct student halls and residential buildings for faculty and staff, they are just as pressure-free to construct academic buildings. But in Dhaka University, students do not get allocated seats if they are in the first year. The situation is the same in student halls.
This situation exists in almost all government universities of the country. Many of the Nobel laureates in the West are associated with one or another university in research and teaching, but our universities are not able to be the repositories of Nobel Prize-winning research. The main reason for this is that all the universities of the country funded by the government are turning into a safe abode for teachers and students instead of centers for world studies.
But for the practice and expansion of world knowledge in the university, I want the expansion of practice and practice center. Instead, the main demand of the students and faculty is for the construction of residential buildings, not the construction of academic buildings. Student organizations are also less vocal in demanding the construction of academic buildings. As a result, after the next 50 years, it will not be surprising if our major universities become fully residential areas.
Dhaka University's social science building has not been completed in six long years, there is no possibility that it will be completed at all. Some sections continue to expand arbitrarily, disrupting the original plan of the art gallery. In this case, their statement, since they collect money from outside donors for the expansion of the building, they are doing the expansion work as per their own needs. On the other hand, nearly 40 years after the establishment of Jahangirnagar University, there is a 'Kala Bhawan' (many jokingly call it 'Banana Bhawan') built on the road—dark and devoid of architectural attention and aesthetics.
Since the establishment of Dhaka University till date, many important departments and centers like Department of Nuclear Engineering, Department of Oceanography, Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology or Center for Genocide Studies, Biotechnology Research Center, Business Research Bureau, Organic Pollutants Research Center etc. have been opened in Dhaka University recently. In this case, the authorities are unable to pay attention to the physical infrastructure that is required to create an environment for modern literacy education. Rather, seat-trading as a trump card of 'student politics' is leading student leaders astray and polluting the university's educational environment with murder and gun fights. Housing is also a tempting bait for teachers. Teacher-politics is largely controlled by this bait. However, the advertisements for teaching jobs or student admissions do not mention anywhere that the university will take responsibility for the accommodation of teachers and students.
So all university authorities should take strict steps to restore healthy environment and construct academic buildings. Otherwise, if residential buildings are built indiscriminately by destroying the land like this, the universities will lose their real face very quickly. If desired, this process can be started from Dhaka University. Or this process can be initiated by rescuing the dilapidated buildings of Jagannath University and constructing academic buildings there.
