According to a report by the Independent, Saudi Arabia's highest religious leader Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz bin-Abdullah Al-Sheikh has declared the game of chess as haram, saying, "Chess is a waste of time and a reason to spend money." It creates enmity and hatred among people.' He said this in response to a question on a television program.

Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin-Abdullah Al-Sheikh compared the game to the pre-Islamic Arabian game of 'Maisir', which was forbidden according to the Qur'an.

However, through his fatwa, the game will not be legally banned in Saudi Arabia. But this incident has given birth to a new controversy.

Saudi Chess Association president Musa bin Thaili told the media that they plan to hold a chess tournament in Mecca on Friday. He is embarrassed in such a situation.

It should be noted that in a message given on Twitter, Musa bin Thaili commented that "many things are illegal and religiously forbidden in this Saudi Arabia."
