Today is the birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

The Dhaka Times Desk Today, March 17, is the 96th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the undisputed leader of the Bengali nation, the great architect of independent Bangladesh and the greatest founder of the Bengali nation in a thousand years.

On this day (March 17) in 1920, Bangabandhu was born into a noble Sheikh family in Tungipara of the then Gopalganj subdivision of Greater Faridpur district. His father's name is Sheikh Lutfar Rahman and mother's name is Saira Khatun. Bangabandhu was the third in the family of four daughters and two sons.

The child known as Khoka later became an immortal beacon of freedom for the oppressed Bengalis. He became an undisputed leader of Bengalis at a mature age for his political wisdom, self-sacrifice and compassion for the people. And so he made a place in world history as the architect of independent Bangladesh.

Bangabandhu's birthday and National Children's Day are celebrated with national status. Today is a public holiday. Various programs have been taken at the government and private level keeping this day in front. President and Prime Minister delivered special messages on the occasion of Bangabandhu's birthday.

Various programs have been taken to celebrate Bangabandhu's birthday with due dignity. These programs include hoisting of the national and party flags in the morning, paying homage to the portrait of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman installed in front of the Bangabandhu Bhavan at 32 Dhanmondi and visiting the shrine of the Father of the Nation at Tungipara, offering wreaths and reading Fateha.
