This artificial heart is not only implanted in his body, it is quite a large device, part of which he has to carry in a backpack. The device you're using is called Syncardia's Freedom Portable Driver. It is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.
He was living a healthy life with this artificial heart. In this way, he was healthy for 18 months. His heart was then transplanted.
