In the past this river was called Atrei. It is mentioned in Mahabharata. It is also connected with the Karatoa River.
The river originates in West Bengal. It flows through Dinajpur district from Naogaon and re-enters India. The river re-enters Bangladesh through Kumarganj and Balurghat blocks of South Dinajpur district. In Dinajpur district the river divides into two rivers named Gabura and Kankara.
