Customer service further ahead. Mobile number portability is going to be launched

The Dhaka Times Desk Now BTRC is going to launch Mobile Number Portability to ensure real ownership of mobile phone number and quality service to customers. In short it is called MNP.

It is known that the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission-BTRC will issue instructions in this regard this week or early next week. In South Asia, this system is in use in Pakistan and India. By launching this, customers will enjoy special benefits.

Six mobile phone operators, including one state-owned, are currently trying to attract customers with their services and offers in the country's market. Because each operator provides different benefits, many people in poor countries are using SIM cards of different operators. In this, a customer has three, four or even six operator SIM cards. And many of them are active. They have to be used again and again in the mobile phone.

With the opportunity to use multiple SIM cards, the country's market is filled with low-quality dual SIM card compatible handsets. Three SIM cards are being used in the handsets of some companies. Not only low-end Indian and Chinese set companies, renowned mobile handset manufacturers Nokia and Samsung have been forced to release dual SIM card compatible handsets in the market.

What exactly is number portability?

This problem would not have existed if the customer could avail the services of the operator according to his convenience and interest with a number purchased in his name. Number portability is the way a customer buys a number from any operator. By keeping this number, he can be attracted to the services of another operator and receive the services of that operator. No need to change his mobile number for this. For example, a customer buys a Grameenphone SIM card. This is what he is using. But at one time he felt that he would not accept the service of Grameenphone. He will take the services of some other operator. For that, if there is MNP service, that customer can use his Grameenphone number to take service of a different operator. However, this will require a registration fee. Experience in South Asia has shown that number portability requires a minimum of three days and a maximum of 10 days.

Note that BTRC first started thinking about the issue in 2007. However, among South Asian countries, Pakistan has achieved success by launching MNP service in March 2007. In 1997, the world's first MNP was launched by Singapore, an East Asian country. MNP mainly revolves around customer service. For this reason, when MNP service is launched in a country, the country's mobile operators are forced to retain customers by innovating new services. Because if you don't get the service as you like, a customer can take the service of another mobile operator by keeping his own number by following certain rules.
