The Dhaka Times Desk The US military has accused the Islamic State (IS) of using chemical weapons in the Middle East.
US says ISIS is firing chemical-rich rocket bombs at Iraq's Mosul. US military authorities have confirmed to the media that ISIS carried out this attack on the US military base last Tuesday.
According to the BBC, the United Nations has banned the use of chemical weapons due to the fear of excessive civilian casualties. No casualties were reported in the attack on Qaira Air Base near IS-controlled Mosul.
Marine General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that the IS terrorist group has the capability to launch chemical bombs. But the bomb used in Tuesday's attack was not that powerful. This attack shows that IS is gradually getting rich in the production of chemical weapons.
Notably, IS has long been suspected of developing chemical weapons for use in Iraq and Syria.
Last Thursday, General Dunford told the US Senate Armed Services Committee that IS fired rockets loaded with sulfur and master blister chemicals. These chemicals can cause severe damage to organs, skin, eyes and respiratory tract. Mosul is known as the second largest city in Iraq. The city has been under IS control for the past two years.
