Ten cricket stars banned for match fixing

The Dhaka Times Desk Cricket is called a gentleman's game. But the stigma of match-fixing over the years is putting a terrible scratch on this title, above all the beauty of the game. The conviction of three Pakistani cricketers Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir for spot-fixing shook the entire cricket world. However, from time to time allegations of match-fixing have come up and are hurting the dignity of the game.

Cricket - Australia v South Africa

1. Hansi Cronje
In April 2000, the batting wizard Sachin Tendulkar, whose bowling he considered the most difficult to face, was accused of match-fixing by Hansi Cronje, along with his three South African team-mates Herschelle Gibbs, Nicky Bowe and Peter Strydom. The South African Cricket Board and the players initially denied the allegations. But Cronje was sacked as captain 3 days later when he admitted that he had not been "completely honest". Cronje and his teammates leaked shocking information about their relationship with the bookies. On 11 October, Cronje was banned for life from playing or coaching cricket. About 2 years later, at the age of 32, Hansi Cronje died in a plane crash along with two other pilots.

But when Hansie Cronje revealed in his confession that it was Azharuddin who introduced him to the bookies, he was also accused of match-fixing. The CBI started investigating all this and Azharuddin also admitted to fixing three ODI matches at one point. As a result, the BCCI banned him from cricket for life in 2000, although they lifted the ban six years later.
